Jurgen Klopp hails "insane" and "exceptional" Liverpool rout of Manchester United

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp describes his side's 5-0 victory over Manchester United as "insane", "special" and "absolutely exceptional".

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has described his side's performance during their 5-0 win at Manchester United this afternoon as "insane", "special" and "absolutely exceptional".

Klopp watched his side score four goals without reply in a rampant first-half display at Old Trafford, before Mohamed Salah completed the rout - and his hat-trick - five minutes into the second half.

The German admitted that he did not expect such a one-sided scoreline, but acknowledged that the victory will go down in history as one of the most remarkable editions of the famous fixture.

"What can I say? Did I expect that? No. But what we did in the last third today was absolutely insane. In the first half, how we pressed high, how we won balls, how we got the ball to the right areas and played from there, scored wonderful goals, actually at half time I told the boys we had to play better," Klopp told Sky Sports News.

"Not in the final third but we started incredibly well and then stopped playing football. Obviously we scored the fourth goal before half time and then the fifth, game over, and we just controlled the game. It was not about scoring more, we just tried getting out of the game without injuries, which didn't work really well.

"The result is insane - if there was ever a result like this in history, probably nobody can remember it. So it will take a while if it ever happens again. It's special. We always wanted to write our own story at this club and the boys put a nice piece in the book of this team tonight."

The scoreline is Liverpool's biggest ever away win over Manchester United, and Klopp admitted that such an achievement is "special".

"That's really special, but for me at least, now is not the moment where we celebrate like crazy because of our respect for the opponent. It's not about that. We know in key moments they had their chances in the first half, but that's football, and you need to be there when you are needed and that's where the boys were," he added.

"Three points, most important, against a proper, proper opponent - a real competitor, that's how it is and it will always stay. Confidence, but you have to understand these games right. You have to learn from it. We lost high to Aston Villa, we smashed Crystal Palace once with a similar result - you have to understand the game.

"I cut the goals out and analyse the game. We can play better football and we have to. You have to stay concentrated in a lot of moments - that's exactly how it is. But 5-0, I couldn't be happier. But being part of this group, this club, in this moment and winning 5-0 is absolutely exceptional."

The victory was also Klopp's 200th in charge of Liverpool, reaching the landmark in fewer games than any other manager of the club.
