Preview: Shrewsbury Town vs. Peterborough United - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's FA Cup clash between Shrewsbury Town and Peterborough United, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Shrewsbury Town will compete for a place in the FA Cup third round this weekend when they take on Peterborough United at the Montgomery Waters Stadium.

The hosts come into this one off the back of a defeat to Sheffield Wednesday last Saturday, while the visitors travel to Shropshire off the back of a loss to Chelsea Under-21s in the EFL Trophy.

Match preview

Shrewsbury have made decent progress in 2022-23 and currently occupy 16th place in League One, having accumulated 23 points from 19 matches under Steve Cotterill.

Nevertheless, the Shrews are on a run of three matches without a victory and will welcome the challenge of FA Cup football as they look to get back on track.

In the first round of the competition, Shrewsbury secured progression with a 2-1 victory over York City thanks to goals from Jordan Shipley and an effort from Luke Leahy, cancelling out a Manny Duku reply.

Last season, Shrewsbury managed to reach the third round of the tournament with wins over Stratford Town and Carlisle United, before bowing out to Liverpool at Anfield by a score of 4-1.

Come Saturday, they will be aiming to put their name in the hat for the next round and potentially net a glamour tie against Premier League opposition once again.

Peterborough come into this tie having enjoyed a positive start to the campaign in League One, sitting in the playoff positions on 31 points from 19 fixtures.

Grant McCann has endured some frustrating fortunes in the last few weeks, however, as his side have won just once in their last five games in all competitions.

Last time out, the Posh were on the end of a 4-2 defeat in the EFL Trophy by Chelsea Under-21s, as goals from Johnson Clarke-Harris and Jack Taylor proved to be merely consolations, as a double from Malik Mothersille and strikes from Cesare Casadei and Ben Elliott decided proceedings.

Peterborough will hope to construct a similar cup run to 2021-22, where they managed to reach the fifth round of the FA Cup before losing out 2-0 to Manchester City.

McCann will hope his side can prove a point this weekend and give themselves some light relief following a turbulent period in the league.

Team News

Home side Shrewsbury could look to make a couple of changes ahead of their FA Cup tie against Peterborough this weekend.

Target man Tom Bloxham could be preferred to loanee Christian Saydee in attack, while Rekeil Pyke could be handed a start in midfield over Jordan Shipley.

Experienced goalkeeper Marko Marosi is expected to keep his place between the sticks, while Tom Bayliss and Robert Street are in danger of picking up a suspension if they are booked during the encounter.

For the visitors, they are likely to make several changes following their choice to field a weakened side in the loss to Chelsea U21s in the EFL Trophy.

Jack Marriott could come back into contention away to Shrewsbury, while Jeando Fuchs and Jack Taylor may link up in midfield from the start as they look to control the match from the beginning.

Ronnie Edwards is suspended for the match due to picking up a straight red against Bristol Rovers last weekend. Jeando Fuchs and Jack Taylor are at risk of suspension if they are yellow carded during the game.

Shrewsbury Town possible starting lineup:
Marosi; Pennington, Dunkley, Flanagan; Pyke, Leahy, Winchester, Moore; Bayliss; Street, Bloxham

Peterborough United possible starting lineup:
Bergstrom; Thompson, Kent, Knight, Butler; Fuchs, Taylor; Poku, Burrows, Mason-Clark; Marriott
