Harriet Dart's Japan Women's Open run came to an end in the second round as Anna Kalinskaya defeated the British number five in straight sets.
Dart had set up a tie with the Russian thanks to a surprise three-set win over fourth seed Linda Fruhvirtova, in a match that was played over two days due to diminishing light.
However, the world number 132 was seen off 6-7[5] 2-6 by Kalinskaya, who will now meet the USA's Ashlyn Krueger for a spot in the semi-finals.
Despite losing her serve in the opening game of the match, Dart came storming back with two breaks of her own to establish a 5-2 lead, but she was broken to love while trying to serve out the set.
Dart came Kalinskaya a taste of her own medicine with a break back in the 12th game to force a tie-breaker, but the Russian still managed to complete a remarkable turnaround before a much more straightforward second set.
Once again, Dart fought back to 2-2 after her Russian foe had roared into a 2-0 advantage, but Kalinskaya won four games on the spin and converted three of the four break points on offer to seal her place in the last eight, taking exactly one hour and 45 minutes to do so.
