Wilfried Gnonto breaks a Premier League scoring record after finding the net in Leeds United's 2-2 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Wilfried Gnonto has broken a Premier League scoring record after finding the net in Leeds United's 2-2 draw away at Manchester United on Wednesday night.

The West Yorkshire outfit entered the contest at Old Trafford without a win in their last seven top-flight matches and without a manager following the dismissal of Jesse Marsch on Monday.

However, the visitors came out the blocks quickly and broke the deadlock after just 55 seconds when Gnonto combined with Patrick Bamford before firing a sweet strike into the bottom-left corner from outside the penalty area.

Leeds then found themselves two goals ahead at Old Trafford for the first time since February 1974, when Raphael Varane put the ball into his own net just three minutes after the interval.

However, Man United fought back in the final half hour and goals from English duo Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho ultimately salvaged a point on home soil.

Gnonto's strike may have only been the second-earliest Premier League goal scored at Old Trafford – after Edin Dzeko's 43-second goal for Manchester City in March 2014 – but nevertheless he was able to make history with his opening goal for Leeds.

Indeed, at the age of 19 years and 95 days, the Italy international became the youngest overseas player to score a Premier League goal against Man United at Old Trafford.

Gnonto, a former Inter Milan youngster, arrived at Leeds from Swiss side FC Zurich last summer and was quickly fast-tracked into the senior squad by Marsch, making his Premier League debut at the end of October.

The forward has made a total of 13 first-team appearances in all competitions so far this season, scoring four goals and registering one assist.

After the match, co-caretaker boss Michael Skubala heaped praise on Gnonto and the rest of his team, telling Match of the Day: "He's a superb player. He's a superb talent and a great person to work with but I thought everyone put their shift in and played out the gameplan.

"Willy did his shift but there were some strong defensive performances too. The fans and the club should be proud."

Leeds are still searching for their first league win since November 5, but a draw at Old Trafford has seen them climb one place to 16th in the table, just one point above the relegation zone.

The Whites will welcome Man United to Elland Road for their next fixture on Sunday, but it remains to be seen whether Skubala, Paco Gallardo and Chris Armas will continue their coaching duties with the first team.

Sporting director Victor Orta is understood to have travelled back from Madrid after holding talks with potential suitors for the managerial vacancy, with Rayo Vallecano's Andoni Iraola the new bookmakers' favourite to succeed Marsch after initial top target Carlos Corberan signed a new contract with West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday.
