Half-Time Report: Tommasso Allan stars as Italy lead Romania at break

Italy lead Romania 22-3 in the race for third place in Pool D in the Rugby World Cup.

Tommasso Allan scored 12 first-half points as the Italians lead Romania 22-3 at half time in Pool D of the Rugby World Cup.

Florin Vlaicu put the Romanians ahead with a 40-metre penalty kick and became the nations' leading points scorer at a World Cup, but Italy thought they had pegged them back moments later through Edoardo Gori but TMO showed that the ball was knocked-on.

However, the Italians did reply on 10 minutes through Leonardo Sarto, who had the pace to burst away from the Romanian defence to cross the line but Allan missed the conversion.

Allan scored a penalty to put the Azzuri 8-3 ahead after Johann van Heerden was sin-binned for tripping Gori, reducing Romania to 14 men.

Gori would finally get his try midway through the first half, bouncing off one tackle to dive across to put his Italian team into a comfortable lead.

The Italians would extend their lead late in the half thanks to Allan, who burst through the Romanian defence and showed them a clean set of heels to go over for a try.
