David de Gea broke Manchester United's clean sheet record in Sunday's EFL Cup final, surpassing legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel in the process.

The Red Devils won their first trophy in six years on Sunday afternoon by recording a 2-0 victory over fellow Premier League side in the EFL Cup final.

The clean sheet was the 32-year-old's 181st in 523 appearances for Man United, which saw him move past Schmeichel to post the most shutouts in the club's history.

De Gea, who arrived at Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid in 2011, made two saves against the Magpies, with two first-half goals from the Red Devils proving enough to claim the trophy.

The stopper has been in strong form for Man United during the 2022-23 campaign, keeping 16 clean sheets in 36 appearances, with 10 of those shutouts occurring in the Premier League.

"I'm happy. It was the perfect way to do it, in the final. To break the record is something amazing, so I'm really proud so let's keep going and try to keep more clean sheets," he told Sky Sports News after Sunday's game at Wembley.

"I think we showed we are a good team. We performed really well. We deserve to win the cup and let's keep going. Today, we showed we can win trophies and everyone is doing really, really well with the new manager and the staff.

"So, we have a game on Wednesday, let's try to enjoy the moment but we go again."

Despite his impressive form this season, there remains uncertainty surrounding De Gea's future at the club, with his current deal due to expire at the end of June.

Speaking back in October, De Gea said that he wanted to stay with Man United "for more years".

"I'm just very focused on the games helping the team as much as I can. Of course, I would like to be here for more years, so let's see what happens in the future. I'm really, really happy here," he told reporters.

De Gea has won the Premier League, FA Cup, two EFL Cups and the Europa League during his time at Old Trafford, in addition to the Community Shield on three separate occasions.

A recent report claimed that Man United are keen to hand De Gea a new contract, but he would have to be prepared to accept a drop on his current salary, which is believed to be worth in the region of £375,000 a week.

De Gea is 10th on Man United's all-time appearance list, just behind Denis Irwin, who featured on 529 occasions for the English giants between 1990 and 2002.
