Preview: Gateshead vs. Dagenham & Redbridge - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's National League clash between Gateshead and Dagenham & Redbridge, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Gateshead will be aiming to boost their survival chances when they host Dagenham & Redbridge at Gateshead International Stadium on Tuesday night in the National League.

The Tynesiders recorded a much-needed win at Aldershot Town on the weekend, while Dagenham were victorious on the coast against relegation-threatened Torquay United.

Match preview

Gateshead ended their five-game winless run with a 3-2 success at the Electrical Services Stadium in Aldershot on Saturday afternoon, courtesy of a Marcus Dinanga brace and an Adam Campbell strike.

The five-goal thriller in Hampshire was the first time the Tynesiders have managed a trio of goals in a single fifth-tier fixture since their 3-0 battering of York City on Boxing Day - supporters will be hoping their side can fight off their relegation fears in what remains of this campaign.

Mike Williamson's men remain 21st in the National League standings thanks to that win but are now only a point behind 20th-placed Yeovil Town, with the added bonus that the North-East club have played two games fewer than the Glovers.

After winning National League North last season, Gateshead have largely struggled on their return to the fifth tier, but with 10 games left to play, the team still have their National League fate in their own hands.

Dagenham & Redbridge made it seven points from their last four league matches with a 2-1 win at Torquay on Saturday afternoon, with a brace from Inih Effiong - the second goal being a 94th-minute winner - securing a maximum for the visitors.

It is back on the road for Dagenham in midweek as they travel to Gateshead, where they will be searching for only their seventh away victory in 19 matchups - a record that does not often correlate with a playoff push.

Ben Strevens's side are currently 10th in the fifth-tier standings, seven points behind seventh-placed Boreham Wood as the season reaches its business end.

With eight showdowns left to go for the Daggers, their only focus will be to claw back that gap to the playoff places in order to have a shot at returning to the Football League for the first time since 2016.

Team News

Gateshead will remain without the services of defender Kenton Richardson after the 23-year-old picked up a foot injury while on duty for England C earlier this month, limiting Williamson's options at the back.

Stephen Wearne is pushing for his full debut in Gateshead colours following his move from League Two outfit Grimsby Town earlier in the week - the attacking midfielder played just under 30 minutes off the bench on Saturday.

Daggers boss Strevens is set to name an unchanged team from the one which earned him his first win as the club's manager, with Mauro Vilhete and Jay Bird likely to retain their places.

Myles Weston and Omar Mussa are still away on international duty with Antigua & Barbuda and Burundi respectively - the duo are expected to be back for Saturday's clash with Dorking Wanderers.

Gateshead possible starting lineup:
Marschall; Pye, Storey, Tinkler, Whelan; Pani, Ward, Francis, Campbell; Olley, Dinanga

Dagenham & Redbridge possible starting lineup:
Strizovic; Onariase, Phipps, Hare, Ling; Johnson, Robinson, Sagaf, Vilhete; Effiong, Bird

SM words green background

We say: Gateshead 2-1 Dagenham & Redbridge

Gateshead earned a vital win at Aldershot on the weekend and will now be confident of collecting three points on home soil on Tuesday night against Dagenham.

The Daggers make the long midweek trip to the North East for this game, and we feel Strevens's men could come up short on Tyneside in this one.
