Manchester United expect to be without the services of Alejandro Garnacho 'for a number of weeks' due to an ankle injury.

Manchester United are expecting to be without the services of Alejandro Garnacho 'for a number of weeks' due to the ankle injury that he picked up against Southampton on Sunday afternoon.

The 18-year-old left Old Trafford on crutches and in a protective boot at the weekend due to the injury that he suffered in a challenge with Southampton defender Kyle Walker-Peters.

Garnacho took to Instagram on Monday to reveal his disappointment at the setback.

"It is difficult to put into words how I'm feeling right now. Unfortunately I will not be able to help my team and teammates in the upcoming games in what is a very important part of the season for us at Manchester United," he wrote.

"I am disappointed to also miss the opportunity to be with my teammates of the Argentinian National Team in what would have been a great and proud moment for me and my family.

"This is part of football and our profession, however, I am already focused in my recovery. God has taught me to never give up and I will make sure I am back stronger than ever!"

Man United have now confirmed that the youngster damaged ankle ligaments on Sunday, and the club are expecting him to be unavailable for selection 'for a number of weeks'.

"Manchester United have revealed that Alejandro Garnacho suffered an ankle injury at the weekend. After the player posted on Instagram to express his disappointment at missing our upcoming games ahead of the international break, and Argentina's two fixtures, the club has suggested that the ankle-ligament injury is still being assessed," read a statement on the club's official website.

"Although this means the duration of Garnacho's absence is still uncertain, he is set to be out for a number of weeks, which is clearly a blow considering his explosive form."

Garnacho has been a regular for Erik ten Hag's side during the 2022-23 campaign, featuring on 29 occasions in all competitions, contributing four goals and five assists in the process.

The Argentina Under-20s international has played 15 times in the Premier League this season, scoring twice and providing two assists for the 20-time English champions.

Garnacho will definitely be absent for Man United's final two games in March - the second leg of their last-16 Europa League clash with Real Betis, and Sunday's FA Cup quarter-final with Fulham.

Ten Hag's side will then return to Premier League action away to Newcastle United on April 2, where they will be bidding to win in the league for the first time since overcoming Leicester City on February 19.

Man United are in a strong position when it comes to advancing in the Europa League, having recorded a 4-1 win over Real Betis in the first leg of their last-16 contest at Old Trafford.
