Rangers defeat Hibernian 1-0 in the Scottish Championship thanks to a James Tavernier free kick.

A second-half goal from James Tavernier has earned Rangers a 1-0 win over Hibernian at Ibrox.

The Glasgow side applied the early pressure and Barrie McKay failed to test Mark Oxley after a good passage of play in the 10th minute, and Martyn Waghorn headed over the bar from a corner two minutes later.

Gers goalkeeper Wes Foderingham nearly gifted Hibs a goal when he gave the ball away to Martin Boyle, but captain Lee Wallace came to the rescue with the goal gaping.

With 21 minutes played, Jason Cummings had a chance from six yards but volleyed over the crossbar.

Jason Holt then struck straight at Oxley from long range, before Boyle missed the target at the other end.

Rangers came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 43rd minute, but Waghorn's shot was cleared off the line by David Gray.

There was still time for another chance before the break. This time it fell to Cummings, who forced Foderingham into a save with a shot from eight yards.

Rangers went up a gear at the start of the second half and Holt's volley towards the bottom-right corner was saved by Oxley.

Liam Fontaine tested Foderingham on the hour mark but the Rangers man was equal to the header.

Moments later, Cummings played Liam Henderson through on goal but the Celtic loanee fired over the bar when one-on-one.

Rangers opened the scoring in style on the 65th minute when Tavernier powered the ball into the top-right corner from the left by-line.

Substitute Nathan Oduwa nearly doubled Rangers lead with 10 minutes remaining but saw his shot go narrowly wide, before Fraser Fyvie missed a header with Hibs next attack.

The win puts Rangers top of the Scottish Championship table.
