New York City FC sack manager Jason Kreis for failure to reach playoffs

New York City FC announce that they have parted company with manager Jason Kreis after just one season in the role following the club's failure to reach the MLS playoffs.

New York City FC have confirmed that they have sacked manager Jason Kreis following their inaugural campaign in the MLS.

City became one of two teams to join the league as part of an expansion in the 2015 season, but the club secured the hiring of Kreis as their coach in 2014 to begin assembling their roster.

Despite having players such as David Villa, Andrea Pirlo and Frank Lampard at their disposal the club endured a difficult first season in the MLS, winning 10 of their 34 matches which was not good enough to earn a place in the playoffs.

As a result, City have made the decision to sack Kreis and his backroom staff, citing their failure to reach the post-season as the major contributing factor in their demise.

Club president Tom Glick said in a statement: "The decision to part company with Jason and his team after two years of working together has not been taken lightly and this is a difficult announcement for all involved.

"We thank Jason for his passion, his efforts and for his contribution to the historic inaugural season of New York City FC. Many memories of this first season will be indelibly etched in the minds of all involved with the club and Jason and his team have played a huge part in that.

"We wish him all the very best in what will undoubtedly be a continued successful career in soccer management."

City finished eighth in the Eastern Conference in their inaugural campaign.
