Dominic Solanke nets twice as Bournemouth beat Newcastle United 2-0 in Saturday's late start to move out of the Premier League relegation zone.

Dominic Solanke scored twice as Bournemouth beat Newcastle United 2-0 in Saturday's late kickoff to move out of the Premier League relegation zone.

The Cherries have risen into 17th position in the table, three points ahead of 18th-placed Luton Town, with the team triumphing for just the second time in the league this season.

As for Newcastle, their seven-game unbeaten run in the league is over, and it is successive losses for the Magpies, having also gone down 2-0 to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League last week.

Eddie Howe's side are seventh in the division on 20 points, one point behind sixth-placed Manchester United, who were 1-0 winners over Luton Town earlier in the afternoon.

Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope was twice called into action inside the first two minutes, first keeping out Ryan Christie's strike before Antoine Semenyo was denied by the England international.

The Magpies had a chance of their own in the eighth minute through Sean Longstaff, but the midfielder's powerful strike was kept out by Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto.

Jamaal Lascelles was then involved at both ends, with the Newcastle centre-back blocking a goal-bound strike from Solanke, before his header was kept out by Neto in the 28th minute.

Pope then made a smart stop to keep out a strike from Justin Kluivert in the 29th minute, before the goalkeeper saved another effort from Christie, with the two teams still level heading into the final 15 minutes of the first period despite opportunities at either end.

Miguel Almiron was forced off with what appeared to be a hamstring issue in another huge injury blow for Newcastle, who are currently being hit with a number of fitness problems.

Bournemouth had another chance to make the breakthrough in the 37th minute through Semenyo after smart work from Solanke, but the attacker's effort was just wide of the post.

Solanke, who was a threat all evening, had a half-chance of his own early in the second half after a misplaced pass from Kieran Trippier, but the striker's touch was just too heavy, and Newcastle were able to survive a dangerous moment.

Bournemouth somehow survived conceding just before the hour, with a brilliant Trippier free kick causing all sorts of issues inside the penalty box, but the hosts managed to scramble clear.

The breakthrough came on the hour, though, with Solanke managing to smash the ball past Pope at his near post after finding space inside the Newcastle penalty box.

Neto denied Anthony Gordon in the period that followed, before Pope kept out a powerful effort from Marcus Tavernier down the other end.

Solanke then doubled Bournemouth's lead in the 73rd minute, with the striker converting from close range with a clever effort after Newcastle had failed to deal with a corner.

There was a VAR check for a possible handball, but the goal was cleared relatively quickly, allowing the Bournemouth supporters to celebrate once again.

Longstaff had a glorious chance to halve the deficit in the 77th minute, but the midfielder curled his effort over the crossbar from an excellent position.

Luis Sinisterra just missed the post with a powerful strike in the 80th minute, before the Bournemouth attacker tested Pope with a rasping strike in the final stages.

Newcastle's injuries and recent fixtures caught up with them on Saturday evening, with the visitors struggling late on, and the scoreline might have been more comfortable had Bournemouth made the most of more positive moments in the final exchanges.

Newcastle will be bidding to bounce back from the disappointing result when they host Chelsea after the international break, while Bournemouth will return to action against Sheffield United later this month.
