How Arsenal could line up against Southampton

Sports Mole looks at how Arsenal could line up for their Premier League clash with Southampton on Tuesday evening.

Arsenal return to the scene of their FA Cup exit on Tuesday as they face another taxing showdown against Southampton in the Premier League.

The Gunners' hopes of a 15th triumph in England's most prestigious competition were dashed on Saturday as Gabriel Magalhaes's own goal propelled Southampton to a well-earned 1-0 win at St Mary's.

Mikel Arteta was understandably disappointed with the manner of his side's defeat, but the Spaniard has witnessed his strongest XI win four and draw one of their last five Premier League games to rise to 11th in the table.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how Arsenal could line up for their second trip to Southampton in the space of three days.

The big story from the Arsenal camp on Saturday was the absence of captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who missed out due to a personal issue, and the striker has also been ruled out of this encounter at St Mary's.

Gabriel Martinelli could be the sole survivor in the final third of the pitch in that case, with Willian, Nicolas Pepe and Eddie Nketiah all likely to be replaced by Emile Smith Rowe, Bukayo Saka and Alexandre Lacazette.

Thomas Partey provided an added dimension to the Gunners midfield and will surely come back in here for Mohamed Elneny, who was dispossessed in the build up to Southampton's goal at the weekend.

Granit Xhaka - who has also demonstrated signs of improvement recently - should also retain his place in the middle of the park with Dani Ceballos doubtful with a calf problem.

Cedric Soares struggled in an unfamiliar left-back position during his return to St Mary's and will make way for Kieran Tierney here if he is passed fit, while Hector Bellerin should have done enough to earn a recall to Arteta's Premier League XI after being benched against Newcastle United.

Gabriel Magalhaes will hope to rectify his weekend mistakes straight away as he occupies a spot in defence alongside Rob Holding, who recently committed his future to the club until 2024.

However, with Gabriel only just making his return from a bout of coronavirus, David Luiz and Calum Chambers are waiting in the wings if Arteta opts not to risk the former Lille man again.
