Manchester City's need for Harry Kane was shown during Sunday's 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, according to former Liverpool captain Graeme Souness.

Former Liverpool captain Graeme Souness has claimed that Manchester City's need for Harry Kane was shown during Sunday's 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

Kane continues to be linked with a move to the Premier League champions, and he was not in the Tottenham squad for the clash with Pep Guardiola's side on the opening weekend.

Ferran Torres struggled to make his mark as the centre-forward in North London, while Gabriel Jesus found it difficult to contribute off the bench in the final 20 minutes.

Souness has said that the clash in the English capital highlighted why Man City are so determined to bring Kane to the Etihad Stadium during this summer's transfer window.

"City need a goalscorer," Souness told Sky Sports News. "Last season, their top scorer was [Ilkay] Gundogan. This isn't rocket science. They haven't bid for Harry Kane for no good reason. They need a proper centre-forward in that team."

Kane has scored 221 goals in 336 appearances for Tottenham in all competitions, including 166 in 242 Premier League outings, but the 28-year-old could be denied a move away from the club this summer.
