UEFA will move the Champions League final away from St Petersburg after Russia declared war on Ukraine.

UEFA will announce on Friday that the 2022 Champions League final has been moved away from St Petersburg, a consequence of Russia declaring war on Ukraine.

During the early hours of Thursday morning, Russian troops invaded Ukraine in a move which has been globally condemned and led to sanctions being enforced.

UEFA are due to hold an emergency meeting on Friday to discuss the developing situation, one which also affects upcoming World Cup qualifiers in March.

However, as expected, it has already been widely reported that the governing body will take the European showpiece event on May 28 away from Russia.

As it stands, no alternatives have formally been proposed, but UEFA is expected to reveal more over the next 24 hours.

Domestic football in Ukraine will not resume for the foreseeable future, having initially been expected to restart at the weekend.
