Respected Spanish journalist Guillem Balague says that former Porto boss Julen Lopetegui could be appointed as Wolverhampton Wanderers manager next week.

Respected Spanish journalist Guillem Balague has said that the prospect of Julen Lopetegui being appointed as the new manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers is "exciting".

Reports in Spain have linked Lopetegui with the Championship club should they be taken over by Chinese businessman Robert Li, although Wolves have moved to distance themselves from an imminent sale.

However, Balague has indicated on Twitter that former Porto boss Lopetegui could replace Kenny Jackett in the dugout at Molineux as early as next week.

Balague said: "What an exciting prospect for Julen Lopetegui to coach Wolves! It should all be confirmed next week if all agreed.

"For those of you asking about Lopetegui: a coach that likes to dominate, but wants his team to control all phases and styles. His teams are aggressive, likes to pressure high, want the ball but can counter. Young, ambitious and was touted as national coach."

Lopetegui failed to win a trophy during his time at Porto - despite losing just nine times in 77 matches - but he won all 11 of his matches as coach of Spain's Under-21 side as he won the European Under-21 Championship in 2013.
