Ralf Rangnick reveals that he "tried to convince" Michael Carrick to remain at Manchester United.

Ralf Rangnick has revealed that he "tried to convince" Michael Carrick to remain at Manchester United but ultimately 'accepted' his decision to walk away from the club.

Carrick led Man United on a caretaker basis following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's dismissal and secured two wins from his three matches at the helm, including a 3-2 success over Arsenal on Thursday.

The 40-year-old announced after the clash with the Gunners that he would be leaving the club rather than dropping back into an assistant role to Rangnick.

The new Man United interim manager has said that he had a meeting with Carrick in an attempt to keep him at the club, but the former midfielder had already made up his mind.

"Michael, I got to know this two days ago. I met with Michael and Kieran [McKenna], I had a long private conversation for more than an hour. I tried to convince him to stay, in the end, I had to accept that," Rangnick told reporters.

"I'm more than happy to work with the current coaching staff, I need their expertise. I will try to find two or three people that will join us in the coming weeks, but due to Brexit, it's not that easy."

Rangnick's first match in charge of the Red Devils will be against Crystal Palace on Sunday.
