Police are forced to evacuate Milan's main metro station after 'a suspicious package' is found, according to reports from Italy.

Police were forced to evacuate Milan's main metro station and suspend the service after 'a suspicious package' was found earlier today, according to reports from Italy.

Milan's San Siro stadium will host the 2016 Champions League final between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid on Saturday night, making the city busier than usual over the weekend.

According to a number of reports from the Italian media, alarm bells were raised after a woman was spotted on camera leaving a parcel on the stairs of the main entrance.

As a result, the Cadorna Station was evacuated for more than one hour as police investigated, but it was later revealed that the package was harmless.

Security across Europe has been raised in recent months due to the increasing threat of terrorist activities.
