Sunderland welcomed Middlesbrough to the Stadium of Light in the Tees-Wear derby on Sunday afternoon.
A first-half double from Cristhian Stuani saw the away side take a two-goal lead into the half-time break.
Sunderland improved in the second period and had one back through Patrick van Aanholt in the 71st minute, but the away side held on to continue their unbeaten start to the new Premier League season.
