Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema speaks out on Kylian Mbappe's decision to snub a move to his side by extending his stay with Paris Saint-Germain.

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has spoken out on Kylian Mbappe's decision to snub a move to his side by extending his stay with Paris Saint-Germain.

Mbappe was widely expected to join Los Blancos on a free transfer this summer following the expiration of his contract in the French capital, and had reportedly already agreed terms with Real ahead of an expected move.

However, the 23-year-old made a controversial U-turn on his future and instead signed a three-year contract extension to remain with PSG instead of making the move to Real.

Speaking after Real beat Liverpool 1-0 at the Stade de France on Saturday to lift its record-extending 14th European cup, Benzema has revealed his thoughts on the collapsed move.

In an interview with French outlet Telefoot, Benzema said: "I would have liked him to be able to fulfil his dream of playing for Real Madrid, being together. He chose PSG, we must respect him. It is his choice, he has many responsibilities.

"We will enjoy playing together in the national team. Everyone makes their own decisions. Real Madrid is Real Madrid, I am not disappointed. We are good friends, it will not affect our relationship."

The pair have formed a successful partnership together in the France national team in the last 12 months following Benzema's reintroduction to the squad in 2021 following a five-year absence.
