Poland's star striker Robert Lewandowski is named in the starting lineup for their opening Group C game at the 2022 World Cup against Mexico, while Raul Jimenez is on the bench for El Tri.

Poland's all-time leading scorer Robert Lewandowski has been named in the starting lineup for their opening Group C fixture at the 2022 World Cup against Mexico this afternoon.

The 34-year-old will wear the captain's armband as he leads the line for the Eagles, with support provided in attack by Jakub Kaminski and Sebastian Szymanski.

A back three of Jakub Kiwior, Kamil Glik and Bartosz Bereszynski will protect goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, with Matty Cash and Nicola Zalewski set to operate as wing-backs.

Grzegorz Krychowiak and Piotr Zielinski are both handed starts in centre-midfield, while the likes of Arkadiusz Milik, Jan Bednarek and Kamil Grosicki are among Poland's substitutes' bench.

As for Mexico, Raul Jimenez – who has been suffering with a groin injury since the end of August – has been named on the bench by Gerardo Martino, with Henry Martin joining Hirving Lozano and Alexis Vega in the front three.

Thirty-seven-year-old goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa will start between the sticks at his fifth World Cup, while experienced centre-back Hector Moreno and midfielder Hector Herrera are also named in the first XI.

Mexico starting lineup: Ochoa; Sanchez, Moreno, Montes, Jesus Gallardo; Alvarez, Herrera, Chavez; Lozano, Martin, Vega

Poland starting lineup: Szczesny; Bereszynski, Glik, Kiwior; Cash, Zielinski, Krychowiak, Zalewski; Kaminski, S. Szymanski; Lewandowski
