Poland have reached the Euro 2016 quarter-finals after they prevailed in a penalty shootout with Switzerland.

Jakub Blaszczykowski had given Poland the lead six minutes before half time but Xherdan Shaqiri's scissor-kick from 19 yards took the game into extra time.

After the game went to penalties, Granit Xhaka missed for Switzerland to leave Poland to book their place in the last eight.

Read below to see how the action unfolded in Saint-Etienne.

1.01pmHello, and welcome to Sports Mole's live coverage of the match between Switzerland and Poland in the second round of Euro 2016.

1.05pmWe've had a two-day break from Euro 2016 action (it's felt like a week, hasn't it?!) but we are finally back for the knockout stages as the competition starts to hot up. The last 16 begins with a tie that could easily prove to be the most evenly-contested of the second round with both Switzerland and Poland lock horns in Saint-Etienne.

1.09pmThis afternoon's contest is the first of three matches to take place in France today. Coming up after this fixture, we have the battle of the home nations as Wales face Northern Ireland before later this evening, we have the tasty encounter between Croatia and Portugal - there should be a few goals in that one! You can follow both those games with Sports Mole.

1.11pmWithout further ado, let's take a look at the two teams.

1.15pmSWITZERLAND XI: Sommer; Lichtsteiner, Schär, Djourou, Rodriguez; Behrami, Dzemaili, Xhaka; Shaqiri, Seferovic, Mehmedi

1.16pmPOLAND XI: Fabianski; Piszczek, Pazdan, Glik, Jedrzejczyk; Blaszczykowski, Maczynski, Krychowiak, Grosicki; Milik, Lewandowski

1.19pmThe main selection dilemma for Switzerland boss Vladimir Petkovic was in attack but he has opted to go with experience over youth by selecting Haris Seferovic in place of Breel Embolo, who drops to the bench after failing to score against France. That's the only alteration as they look to build on their unbeaten start to the tournament.

1.23pmThere's a lot more upheaval in the Poland ranks as Adam Nawalka makes four alterations to the team that overcame Ukraine on Tuesday. Lukasz Piszczek, Jakub Blaszczykowsi, Kamil Grosicki and Krzysztof Maczynski are the players brought into the side .

1.28pmIf you are a lover of goals, then don't get your hopes up too much about this match. Just five have been scored in their six games so far, with none of their games featuring more than two. It's strange really given the attacking options in both sides but maybe this is the occasion where both teams come out firing.

1.32pmHEAD TO HEAD! There have been 10 previous meetings between the two sides with half of them finishing in a draw, which only adds to the feeling that we may need extra time and penalties to decide this match. More encouragingly, they played out a 2-2 draw in a friendly in November 2014 but that has been the only fixture between the two nations since 2001.

1.35pmWe have still got 25 minutes to go until kickoff in Saint-Etienne so why not use that time wisely and head over to our Euro 2016 section? With the matches coming thick and fast over the next 54 hours, it is brimming with content.

1.41pmSwitzerland are solid throughout their team but if they had a more prolific striker, they could potentially become one of the best teams in Europe. Of course, they don't possess a side full of star names but they all work for each other and create numerous chances for Seferovic. Unfortunately, the 24-year-old hasn't delivered so far but he does get into threatening positions and sooner rather than later, you'd think he would end his scoring duck. Switzerland have high hopes for Breel Embolo but Petkovic has probably make the correct decision in deeming the occasion too big and too early for Embolo to start.

1.46pmIt's a similar story for Poland with the difference being that they have that prolific number nine - he just hasn't found his form in this tournament. There's still time for that to change and there is a reason why he will be favoured to score the first goal this afternoon but Robert Lewandowski will see this as a missed opportunity if he fails to get on the scoresheet for the fourth game in succession. I've got a feeling the Bayern Munich man will find his clinical touch this afternoon...

1.50pmPREDICTION! The only result that I can predict with any degree of certainty is a draw. I expect Poland to have the better of this but there's something about Switzerland that makes me think they can have a run in this tournament. Switzerland to win on penalties after a 1-1 draw after extra time.

1.55pmBoth teams have made their way out onto the pitch in Saint-Etienne. The winners of this tie will play either Croatia or Portugal. There's a real chance for all four nations to reach the final of this competition.

1 minIt will be Poland who get us underway. They have two players taking the kickoff - that's almost unheard of in this tournament!

1 minCHANCE! Almost the most dramatic of starts! Sommer plays one of his defensive teammates into a mess and after Lewandowski closes down the goalkeeper, the ball falls to Milik but he fails to hit an empty net from 20 yards. He blazed his shot over but there's no doubting he should have scored there.

4 minQuite surprisingly, this match has started at a ferocious pace. They are not playing like two sides who have struggled to hit the back of the net. Poland are having a lot of the play so far but Switzerland look a threat down the right.

6 minLewandowski looks much sharper than he has all tournament. He works himself into a position down the left-hand side of the penalty area but he chose to shoot rather than cross and the chance went begging. Milik has also had an opening but his header was straight at Sommer.

10 minCHANCE! Switzerland have decided to retain possession for a few minutes and it almost leads to a goal. Shaqiri slides a low cross towards Dzemaili but his attempted left-footed sweep into the corner goes into the side-netting.

13 minI'd go as far as saying that Switzerland are the better team now. They almost got in again when Lichtsteiner was released down the right but his cross rebounded off his foot after being blocked by a defender. Goal kick to Poland.

17 minPoland's play in the final third is a joy is superb. Switzerland are failing to get near the interchanges but Poland's final ball is letting them down so far. Decent start, this, but both teams need to be more direct in and around the penalty area.

20 minSHOT! Maczynski has scored one goal in 18 appearances for his country but this effort never came close to marking his second strike for Poland. He tried his luck on the half-volley from 25 yards but he dragged his shot several yards wide of the post.

22 minIt's all been a bit desperate over the past few minutes. Moments after Maczynski's effort, Rodriguez drilled a free kick on goal for Switzerland from at least 40 yards but it was straight at the wall.

25 minSHOT! That was better from Rodriguez but he was still some way from beating Fabianski. He cut inside from the left but although his right-footed strike was well hit and travelling towards goal, it was two yards from forcing the goalkeeper into his first bit of work this afternoon.

29 minCHANCE! Poland should be ahead. A terrific outswinging corner from Milik finds Krychowiak but his free header is sent wide of the target from 10 yards. He knows he should have done better there.

31 minCHANCE! Poland are stepping it up a gear. An excellent through ball from Lewandowski is lacking a little bit of pace but Grosicki anticipates it and attempts the lob. For a moment, it looked to be heading in but it just looped off target.

33 minCHANCE! Another opportunity for Poland. Blaszczykowski holds off the attention of the defender down the left and finds Milik at the back post. However, his half-volley is rushed and over the crossbar at the near post.

35 minCHANCE! Yet another chance in this game but this time, it is for Switzerland. Rodriguez's outswinging corner finds Schar but his free header is into the ground and straight at Fabianski.

39 minGOAL! Switzerland 0-1 Poland (Blaszczykowski)

39 minMoments after Switzerland had half-chances through Dzemaili and Djourou, Poland take the lead! A rapid break-away ends with Grosicki's cross being dummied by Milik and finding Blaszczykowski at the back post. The midfielder has time to pick his spot and decides to roll the ball through the goalkeeper's legs and into the corner.

43 minSwitzerland have delivered a fairly positive response since the goal but Poland look confident right now. In all fairness, that opening goal was deserved and if they can net another, it may be enough to win this game.

45 minThere will be one minute of added-on time.

45+2 minHALF TIME: Switzerland 0-1 Poland

2.48pmThe half-time whistle goes in Saint-Etienne and Poland head into the break with a lead given to them by Jakub Blaszczykowski. Switzerland had just started to create their own opportunities but they now face an uphill task to get back into this game.

46 minThe two teams are back out in Saint-Etienne. Big 45 minutes coming up for both nations. Switzerland get the game restarted.

47 minSwitzerland have returned all guns blazing! Shaqiri weaves his way into the penalty area before winning a corner, which is viciously swung into the six-yard area and cleared by a Poland defender.

49 minPoland are yet to get going in this second half. Switzerland are throwing men forward and for the first time in the game, there is panic at the back.

50 minCHANCE! Lewandowski has done nothing in this tournament but he almost produces the spectacular. Grosicki surges inside onto his right foot before his teammate takes the ball off him. There's limited space to aim at goal but he bunts the ball towards the top corner, only to see Sommer pull off the save.

51 minSAVE! I got this game wrong - it's a terrific contest! Switzerland go straight back up the other end through Shaqiri, who seems to have found an extra yard of pace since the break. He breezes past two defenders before unleashing a stinging effort that is well pushed away by Fabianski.

54 minSHOT! Blaszczykowski has been excellent in this game and he almost finds a second goal with a stunning strike from the edge of the penalty area but Sommer is equal to it and punches the ball clear. Tremendous game.

56 minBOOKING! What a crude challenge from Schar! He slides in aggressively on Lewandowski who is sent flying into the air and somersaults onto the ground. It should be a red but the referee gives a yellow. Controversial.

58 minSUBSTITUTION! Switzerland make the first substitution of the match and Embolo is on for Dzemaili. It's a bit of a surprise because the midfielder has been one of Switzerland's best players.

61 minThere's a few late challenges going in - I wouldn't be surprised to see a few more bookings. Embolo is lucky to avoid a caution after going in late on Lewandowski.

65 minEmbolo has now clattered into Fabianski while trying to head in a cross, but he has every reason to challenge the goalkeeper, who it has to be said does brilliantly. Switzerland need to find something different in attack, however. Poland look comfortable at the moment.

70 minSUBSTITUTION! Eren Derdiyok is on for Switzerland in place of Mehmedi. The Swiss now have three forwards on the pitch, as well as Shaqiri. It's all or nothing now.

73 minSHOT! Lichsteiner wins a free kick for Switzerland just under 25 yards from goal. It's in Shaqiri and Rodriguez territory. Rodriguez takes it and it looks to be heading for the top corner but Fabianski pulls off a stunning save to tip it over the crossbar.

76 minSUBSTITUTION! Third and final change for Switzerland who introduce Gelson Fernandes for Behrami, who appears to be suffering with an injury. Poland are yet to make one yet.

78 minWOODWORK! Seferovic has done nothing in this game but he almost finds an equaliser with a venomous effort from 16 yards. The ball fell to him after Djourou had seen a goalbound shot blocked and he nearly took full advantage, only to see his strike cannon off the crossbar. So unlucky.

82 minGOAL! Switzerland 1-1 Poland (Shaqiri)

82 minOh my word. Ladies and gentleman, you have your goal of the tournament so far. After a cross was only cleared to the edge of the penalty area, Shaqiri decided to try to execute a scissor-kick from 19 yards and the connection went like a dream. His shot from mid-air flew into the bottom corner via the aid of the post and Switzerland are level.

86 minTold you that we would be getting extra time...

Maybe I am speaking too soon. Switzerland have all of the momentum after that unreal effort from Shaqiri but there are gaps in defence. They have three strikers on the pitch.

90 minThere will be four minutes of added-on time. Embolo just wasted a chance at a volley at the back post, although I'm perhaps being a little harsh on the 19-year-old. It would have been some goal had it gone in.

90+2 minPoland earn a free kick from 30 yards out and Milik has his eyes on this. It looks too far out and it turns out to be as he curls it wide of the far post. We are going to extra time.

90+4 minFULL TIME: Switzerland 1-1 Poland

91 minRight then, strap yourself in, we are ready for extra time to begin.

93 minYou have to wonder how long it is going to be until Poland make a change. It's a hot day in Saint-Etienne and they are beginning to wilt to a certain extent.

96 minSHOT! The confidence is oozing from Shaqiri and he attempts the most audacious of chips from inside the penalty area. Unfortunately for the winger, it floats just over the bar but positive signs for Switzerland. Poland are offering nothing.

99 minCramp is starting to set in for some of the Poland players. When are they going to make a change?!

100 minThere's almost an inevitability that this is going to a penalty shootout. Switzerland continue to have the better of the play but they aren't exactly knocking the door down now.

101 minSUBSTITUTION! Poland finally make an alteration with Maczynski coming off for the experienced Tomasz Jodlowiec.

104 minSUBSTITUTION! Another change for Poland as Grosicki is replaced by the pacey Slawomir Peszko. He could have an impact in the second half of extra time. It needs someone to stretch the action and he could do that.

105+1 minHALF TIME: Switzerland 1-1 Poland

106 minWe are back underway. Will we find a goal in the final 15 minutes? Not if we have a repeat of the opening 15 minutes of extra time...

108 minSHOT! Schar attempts to break the tension with a speculative effort from 30 yards but there is only one place that is going and it's not in the net.

110 minIt's all Switzerland again now and Shaqiri is starting to produce the bit of magic that may help his side nick a winner. A sharp turn inside the penalty area deceives the defender but he can only win a corner, which comes to nothing.

113 minCHANCE! Was that Switzerland's chance to win it? Another outrageous bit of play from Shaqiri finds Derdiyok but the striker is probably too close to Fabianski and although his header is on its way to the corner, the goalkeeper pulls off a comfortable save.

118 minIt's still all Switzerland but I think that will be it as far as chances are concerned. Looking like penalties. Poland will definitely be the happier about that.

120 minFULL TIME: Switzerland 1-1 Poland

4.33pmWe are heading to penalties! I backed Switzerland to win on penalties at the start so I have to stick with that. That said, I think Poland will be relieved to get to this stage and may feel as though they have less to lose.

4.35pmIt will be Switzerland to take first. Lichtsteiner the man to take it. Here we go...

4.35pmGOAL! Switzerland 1-0 Poland (Lichtsteiner)

4.36pmGOAL! Switzerland 1-1 Poland (Lewandowski)

4.37pmMISS! Switzerland 1-1 Poland (Xhaka) Xhaka sends it well wide!

4.37pmGOAL! Switzerland 1-2 Poland (Milik)

4.38pmGOAL! Switzerland 2-2 Poland (Shaqiri)

4.39pmGOAL! Switzerland 2-3 Poland (Glik)

4.39pmGOAL! Switzerland 3-3 Poland (Schar)

4.40pmGOAL! Switzerland 3-4 Poland (Błaszczykowski)

4.41pmGOAL! Switzerland 4-4 Poland (Rodriguez)

4.42pmGOAL! Switzerland 4-5 Poland (Krychowiak)

4.42pmPOLAND ARE THROUGH TO THE QUARTER-FINALS OF EURO 2016!

4.49pmPoland reach the last eight after Switzerland miss the one and only penalty of a high-quality shootout. Based on normal and extra time, they didn't deserve to advance but I'm sure they don't care - they are through to face either Croatia or Portugal.

4.49pmThat will be all from Sports Mole for this game but please hop on over to our coverage of Wales and Northern Ireland. That game starts in 10 minutes time! Goodbye for now.
