Preview: Morecambe vs. Charlton Athletic - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's League One clash between Morecambe and Charlton Athletic, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

After failing to win their last four games, relegation-threatened Morecambe will look to return to winning ways when they welcome Charlton Athletic to the Mazuma Stadium for Tuesday's League One contest.

Like their hosts, the Addicks are also enduring a poor spell of form, having picked up just two points from their previous five matches.

After winning just one of their previous 10 games, Morecambe will have to improve in their final 10 fixtures if they are to avoid relegation.

The Shrimps made the trip to Montgomery Waters Meadow on Saturday to face Shrewsbury Town, who took a two-goal lead before Dan Crowley halved the deficit in first-half stoppage time.

However, an 84th-minute effort from Chey Dunkley ensured that Morecambe headed back to the North West empty-handed, with the 3-1 defeat extending their winless run to four matches.

As a result of Saturday's loss, Morecambe remain in the bottom four, with two points separating them from Accrington Stanley, who sit just outside the drop zone and have played two games less than the Shrimps.

Although Morecambe are winless in 13 away league games, they have proven to be a tough team to beat on home turf, losing just one of their last 12 home matches in the third tier.

With 11 points separating them from the drop zone, 16th-placed Charlton are comfortably clear of the bottom four, but they will be desperate to end their poor run of form.

In Saturday's home meeting with Accrington, the Addicks had to be content with a 1-1 draw after Steven Sessegnon cancelled out Shaun Whalley's opening goal before half time.

Sessegnon's strike may have ended a run of four games without a goal, but the result extended Charlton's winless run to five matches.

Sitting three points adrift of 12th position, Charlton still have the chance to record a top-half finish, which would represent an improvement on last season when they ended up in 13th place.

Having failed to win their previous two meetings with Morecambe, Charlton will be hoping that it is third time lucky as they attempt to claim their first league win over Tuesday's opponents.

Team News

Jake Taylor, Max Melbourne and Jacob Bedeau are all sidelined for the hosts, while Michael Mellon has been ruled out of the season with a shoulder injury.

Former Everton striker Oumar Niasse, who joined the club on a short-term deal last week, came off the bench to make his debut on Saturday and with the forward still lacking match fitness, he is expected to remain among the substitutes.

After dropping down to the bench at the weekend, Ashley Hunter could return to the starting lineup for Tuesday's contest.

As for the visitors, they are unable to call upon the services of Todd Kane and Chuks Aneke, who are both nursing hamstring injuries.

Mandela Egbo recently featured for the Under-21 side as he steps up his recovery from a long-term injury, but he is not ready to return to first-team action.

Scott Fraser has missed the last two games with a hip issue, and the midfielder is still a doubt for the midweek away trip.

Morecambe possible starting lineup:
Ripley; Love, Rawson, Simeu, Gibson; Weir, Shaw; Hunter, Crowley, Mayor; Stockton

Charlton Athletic possible starting lineup:
Maynard-Brewer; Clare, Ness, Hector, Sessegnon; Kilkenny, Dobson; Rak-Sakyi, Payne, Blackett-Taylor; Leaburn

We say: Morecambe 1-1 Charlton Athletic

With both sides currently struggling to pick up victories, we think that they could cancel one another out in a cagey contest, which could result in the spoils being shared.
