Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that a fitness issue has kept Edinson Cavani out of Saturday's Premier League clash with Newcastle United.

The Uruguay international was a notable absentee when Man United's squad was announced ahead of kickoff, with the experienced striker not even on the bench against the Magpies.

Solskjaer has said that Cavani picked up "a little knock in training" but is not expected to spend too long on the sidelines, so he could be ready for the Champions League clash against Young Boys on Tuesday night.

"He's still not ready," Solskjaer told Man United's official website. "He got a little knock in training, so hopefully won't be too long."

Cavani handed the number seven shirt back to Cristiano Ronaldo upon his return to the club, and the latter has been named in the starting XI for the clash with Newcastle.

The former Paris Saint-Germain forward has scored 17 times in 40 appearances for the Red Devils and featured against Wolverhampton Wanderers before the international break.
