Cristiano Ronaldo's record vs. Atletico Madrid

Sports Mole looks at Cristiano Ronaldo's record against Atletico Madrid, as Manchester United prepare to face the Spanish side in the Champions League.

Manchester United will travel to Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday evening for the first leg of their last-16 Champions League contest with Spanish champions Atletico Madrid.

The Red Devils will be looking to claim a positive result in Madrid ahead of the reverse match at Old Trafford on March 15, and the fixture will see Cristiano Ronaldo resume his rivalry with Atletico.

Ronaldo has been in impressive scoring form for the 20-time English champions this term, finding the back of the net on 15 occasions in 28 appearances, including six goals in five Champions League outings, with his form in the group stage key to sending Man United into the knockout round.

The Portugal international has plenty of experience when it comes to taking on the Red and Whites, and he will surely relish the chance to line up against Diego Simeone's side once again.

Ahead of Wednesday's Champions League contest in Spain, Sports Mole looks at how the 37-year-old has performed against Atletico in the past.

Ronaldo has incredibly tackled Atletico 35 times during his professional career, boasting a record of 17 wins, nine draws and nine defeats against them, managing 25 goals and nine assists in the process.

The Portuguese won seven, drew five and lost four of his 16 La Liga meetings with the club during his time at Real Madrid, scoring 12 times and providing five assists.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo has a record of four wins, one draw and two defeats against Atletico in the Copa del Rey - scoring six times and providing one assist - but he failed to register in his two Spanish Super Cup appearances against the Red and Whites, which came during the 2014-15 campaign.

Only against Sevilla (27) has Ronaldo scored more goals versus a single opponent, while he has taken on Atletico on more occasions than any other club, so he will be in familiar surroundings on Wednesday evening, especially considering that he spent such a long period in Madrid representing Los Blancos.

The forward has also crucially faced Atletico 10 times in the Champions League, with six of the meetings coming during his time at Real Madrid and four while at Juventus.

Ronaldo was again not on the scoresheet against Atletico in the 2016 final, but he netted the winning penalty in the shootout, which finished 6-4.

The Portuguese scored three times against the Red and Whites in the semi-final first leg in 2016-17, meanwhile, as Real Madrid progressed 4-2 on aggregate despite losing the second leg 2-1 at Vicente Calderon.

For Juventus, he hit a brilliant treble in the last-16 stage of the 2018-19 competition to complete an incredible turnaround for the Old Lady, who had trailed 2-0 from the first leg of the affair.

Ronaldo did not score in either appearance against Atletico during the 2019-20 campaign, but he helped his side claim a point in a 2-2 draw in Madrid before playing the full 90 minutes of a 1-0 success in Turin, with the matches taking place in the group stage of the competition.
