Their dominance in the opening stages continued and they felt they should have had a penalty when Sterling's shot was blocked by the arm of Gareth Barry.

Mario Balotelli then saw a long-range free kick pushed behind by Howard, before the keeper got down well to save Adam Lallana's header from the resulting corner.

Everton gradually began to see more of the ball and Simon Mignolet had to be alert to hold on to Romelu Lukaku's drive.

Leighton Baines then found himself in behind the Reds' defence, but his pull-back across goal was cleared by Dejan Lovren before it could reach Lukaku.

Just past the hour mark Steven Naismith threatened with a swerving effort that was saved by the keeper.

Liverpool finally broke the deadlock in the 65th minute when Gerrard curled a free kick from just outside the box into the top corner past Howard.

They almost doubled their lead moments later as Balotelli met Sterling's cross from the left, before seeing his volley hit the bar.

The Reds seemed likely to hold out and claim the win, until Jagielka fired home a half-volley into the top corner from 25 yards out to ensure that the points were shared.
