RB Leipzig complete the signing of forward Timo Werner from Chelsea on a four-year contract until the summer of 2026.

RB Leipzig have completed the signing of Timo Werner from Chelsea on a four-year contract until the summer of 2026.

The 25-year-old returns to Leipzig after spending two seasons with the West Londoners, who spent around £47.5m on the Germany international in the summer of 2020.

Chelsea have allegedly agreed to sell Werner back to the Bundesliga outfit for an initial £20m, which could rise to around £25m with add-ons.

Werner landed in Germany on Monday evening before undergoing his medical and finalising personal terms with Die Roten Bullen on Tuesday.

Prior to an official announcement from the two clubs, Werner took to social media to confirm his exit from Stamford Bridge.

A statement from the forward on Instagram read: "Today marks the end of my journey with Chelsea. I am incredibly grateful for the time I spent at this special club.

"At this point I would like to express my appreciation for my teammates, the coaches & staff, and especially for you, the special supporters of Chelsea Football Club.

"I felt so much love and support throughout the last two years and I will never forget how you guys stood behind me in good and in challenging times! We lifted trophies like the Champions League together and I will always remember the song you wrote and chanted for me.

"I'm already looking forward to hopefully playing at Stamford Bridge again one day! See you soon, Timo."

Speaking to Leipzig's official website on Werner's return to the club, commercial director for sport Florian Scholz said: "Timo Werner's signing is a special transfer for us. We had a lot of great years together in Leipzig that saw Timo become the club's record goalscorer and a Germany international.

"His return means a lot to the supporters because Timo was a real fan favourite and figure of identification for a lot of people.

"The transfer made a lot of sense to us, both because of Timo's quality and the financial aspects of the deal. Now we want to build on the success that we started together and achieve our goals with Timo's help.

"Not only does that mean qualification to the Champions League, but we also want to get as far as possible in the cup competitions."

Prior to joining Chelsea, Werner spent four goal-laden years with Leipzig between 2016 and 2020, finding the net 90 times and providing 40 assists in 156 appearances across all competitions.

The Germany international ended each of his four seasons at Die Roten Bullen as the club's top scorer, and in 2019-20 – his final campaign at the club – he enjoyed the best scoring season of his professional career, netting 34 goals in 45 games including 28 strikes in 34 Bundesliga matches.

At Chelsea, however, Werner was unable to replicate his impressive form in front of goal, finding the net just 10 times in 56 Premier League appearances.

The forward was successful with the Blues in the Champions League, though, as was an important member of Thomas Tuchel's squad who eventually beat Manchester City in the 2020-21 final.

Werner leaves Chelsea after scoring a total of 23 goals and providing 21 assists in 89 appearances for the Blues across all tournaments, as well as winning the FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

Die Roten Bullen have also completed the signing of striker Benjamin Sesko on a five-year deal, with the 19-year-old returning to sister club Red Bull Salzburg on loan for the 2022-23 season.
