Tommy Boyd says that his former club Celtic have made the right decision in appointing Brendan Rodgers as the team's new manager.

Former Celtic defender Tommy Boyd has said that he has been surprised by the level of optimism in Glasgow after the appointment of Brendan Rodgers as the club's new manager.

Rodgers has signed a 12-month rolling contract with the Scottish Premiership champions and Boyd, who made over 300 league appearances for Celtic, feels that the club's board have made the correct decision in replacing Ronny Deila with the Northern Irishman.

Speaking at an event to promote the annual Celtic Foundation golf day, the 50-year-old said: "Brendan's arrival has rekindled the fires of so many supporters. This optimism is something I didn't think I'd see but that shows you the board have certainly made the right choice.

"The supporters are loving it. They are really looking forward to the season. We've not had this level of enthusiasm at the start of the season since Martin came in. Hopefully we'll have the same kind of feelings come the end of the season like we did back then."

Celtic have won the league title in Scotland in the last five seasons.
