Neil Warnock "not confident" of Cardiff City promotion

Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock admits that he is "not confident" of winning automatic promotion to the Premier League, despite opening up a seven-point gap to third.

Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock has admitted that he is still "not confident" about his side's chances of winning automatic promotion to the Premier League this season.

The Bluebirds came from behind to beat Brentford 3-1 at Griffin Park this evening, making it seven Championship wins on the bounce to open up a seven-point lead over third-placed Aston Villa, who lost at home to Queens Park Rangers.

Cardiff must still face three of the other teams in the top five before the end of the season, though, and Warnock is refusing to take anything for granted with just nine games of the campaign remaining.

"I'm not confident of anything in the Championship. We've got difficult games - this is the first of six really tough away games. We play them all. We've got four at home, including Wolves - that should be a good match," he told Sports Mole.

"[The players] are doing what I said to them - 'Let's enjoy it'. All the pressure is on the big clubs with expectations. I spoke to Vincent [Tan] and Mehmet [Dalman] and just said, 'Look, we'll get in the playoffs this year and we might lose the playoffs. And if we lose the playoffs, we'll have a go next year'.

"There's no extra pressure on me that we've got to go up, we've got to do this, we've go to do that. They know the situation, and my lads can just enjoy it. It won't always go well for us - we'll lose games between now and the end of the season, but other teams will, so let's enjoy it.

"Players are players. If I was a player, there is only one thing I'd want to do and that is play at the top level. Unfortunately I was a brainless winger and never got beyond the third division - that's why I took up management."

Cardiff's next match sees them travel to fifth-placed Derby County on Sunday.
