Result: Berwick ease past East Fife to keep promotion hopes alive

Berwick cruise to a comfortable 4-1 victory over playoff rivals East Fife to move within four points of a top-four spot.

Berwick have kept their Scottish League Two promotion hopes alive courtesy of a comfortable 4-1 victory away to East Fife this evening.

Paul Willis, Kyle Wilkie, Blair Henderson and David Gold all got on the scoresheet for the visitors to Bayview Stadium as Berwick closed the gap on the final promotion playoff spot to just four points.

Willis came close with an effort from the edge of the box shortly before he opened the scoring in the 14th minute, firing home from 20 yards after a throw-in had dropped to him.

The goalscorer almost turned provider three minutes later when his corner found Andrew Russell at the back post, but the striker could not keep his effort down.

Russell had another chance midway through the first half as Berwick kept the pressure up, this time being denied by the keeper after good work from Scott Maxwell and Ross Gray.

Jonathan Fairbairn, Paul Currie and Wilkie all came close before the half was out, but they were within inches of going into the break level when Derek Riordan's effort cannoned off the bar in the closing stages.

The visitors finally had their second goal seven minutes after the restart when Wilkie met Russell's cross to plant home a header and claim his first Berwick goal.

Henderson and Russell both threatened to get a third around the hour mark, but Riordan gave Berwick another warning shot moments later when his free kick was saved by Michael Andrews.

Colin Cameron's side killed things off once and for all with 20 minutes of the match remaining as Henderson took Currie's pass in his stride before coolly slotting home.

The hosts did pull one back two minutes from time when Sean Dickson bundled the ball home from a corner, but it was too little too late for Gary Naysmith's men.

Indeed, Berwick restored their three-goal advantage through Gold in the closing stages to climb to seventh in the table, just four points behind fourth-placed East Fife with a game in hand.
