Brendan Steele has recorded a second-round score of 70 to open up a three-shot lead at the Valero Texas Open.

The world number 85 had started the tournament with a 64 and although he could not match that effort, another six birdies helped him lead from three players who share second spot.

American duo Scott Langley and Charley Hoffman and Australia's Stuart Appleby occupy those positions while seven players, including Patrick Reed, sit a shot further adrift in a tie for fifth.

Luke Donald and Padraig Harrington remain in contention in 12th and 19th place respectively, but Bryson Dechambeau missed his first cut as a PGA professional after registering scores of 74 and 73 over his first two rounds.
