Aston Villa announce that Ashley Young will be leaving the Premier League club at the end of his contract next month.

Aston Villa have announced that Ashley Young will be leaving the club this summer.

After a successful one-and-a-half season stint with Inter Milan, Young made the decision to take on a second spell at the West Midlands outfit in June 2021.

The versatile wideman had previously starred for the club between 2007 and 2011, earning him a transfer to Manchester United, and he was largely expected to remain as a backup squad member upon his return.

However, the former England international has made a total of 36 starts and 21 substitute outings across the last two seasons, scoring one goal and providing two assists.

Despite now being 37 years of age, Young made 29 appearances in the Premier League this season, helping Villa earn a place in next year's Europa Conference League.

That set up the possibility of Villa retaining Young's experience and know-how for another 12 months, something which may have proven valuable if the club have a deep run on the continental scene.

Instead, Villa revealed on Wednesday that a decision had been taken for Young to depart the club when his contract expires next month.

A statement read: "Aston Villa can confirm that Ashley Young will be leaving the club upon the expiration of his contract.

"A firm fans' favourite who was a versatile, experienced and popular member of the dressing room, made 250 appearances in claret and blue over two spells with the club.

"Everyone at Aston Villa would like to sincerely thank Ashley for his service to the club and wish him all the very best in his future endeavours."

As it stands, it is assumed that Young will continue his playing career elsewhere having played a key role in Villa's revival under Unai Emery.
