UEFA condemns the attack which left a Liverpool fan with a serious head injury ahead of their match against Roma.

UEFA has issued a statement condemning the ugly scenes which marred Liverpool's 5-2 victory over Roma in the Champions League.

Ahead of the game, an attack on a group of Reds supporters outside of the ground left one of them hospitalised with a serious head injury.

Two travelling Roma fans were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in relation to the incident.

Roma has since condemned the attack and admitted that it has "brought shame" on the club, and UEFA has added its voice to the condemnation, confirming that disciplinary action against the Italian side will be considered once official reports have been filed.

"UEFA is deeply shocked by the vile attack that occurred ahead of Liverpool FC vs. AS Roma and our thoughts are with the victim and his family," said the governing body in a statement. "The perpetrators of this ignominious attack have no place in football and we trust they will be dealt with utmost severity by the authorities.

"UEFA is waiting to receive full reports before deciding on potential disciplinary charges."

The Liverpool fan subjected to the attack is said to be in a critical condition in hospital.
