Stoke City manager Mark Hughes says that his side "needed to get the job done" in the Potters' 2-1 victory against Swansea City on Saturday.

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes has said that his side "needed to get the job done" in the Potters' 2-1 victory against Swansea City on Saturday.

The hosts were behind early on following Wilfried Bony's strike, but Xherdan Shaqiri levelled before Mame Biram Diouf put Stoke in front to secure Hughes's side the three points.

The result was Stoke's first win since October after suffering a poor run of form, which Hughes was wary of heading into Saturday's match.

"We needed the three points," the Potters boss told Sky Sports News. "We haven't got the results we deserved in recent weeks, we just needed to get the job done.

"It was difficult to go behind, clearly the worst start we could have imagined. It was a great finish from Wilfried Bony, but we were able to put pressure on them and we got two goals in quick succession.

"The last period when they were throwing balls in our box, we handled it well but I felt we could have scored a few on the counter. Jack [Butland] is a top level goalkeeper - that is why once he said he was fit to go we were always going to bring him back in."

Stoke's win lifts them to 13th in the top-flight table, while Swansea remain bottom, four points adrift of safety.
