England collapse in less than two hours on the final day of the second Test in Adelaide to hand Australia a 2-0 Ashes series lead.

Australia have moved into a 2-0 series lead in The Ashes courtesy of a 120-run victory over England at the Adelaide Oval.

The tourists went into the final day of the second Test with hopes of pulling off a remarkable comeback after yesterday's performance left them on 176-4 in pursuit of a record 354 runs.

In a sign of things to come, nightwatchman Chris Woakes was dismissed with just the second ball of the day, before skipper Joe Root - whose wicket would be vital to England's fightback - went in the third over without adding to his overnight tally of 67.

From thereon it was a total collapse as Moeen Ali (2), Craig Overton (7) and Stuart Broad (8) all left in quick succession. Jonny Bairstow put up some fight with 36 runs before he too fell to Mitchell Starc (5-88) as the Aussies closed out a 120-run victory in just an hour and three quarters.

England, who lost their last six wickets for 57 runs, now need to avoid defeat at the Waca in Perth - a ground where they have not won since 1978 - to avoid surrendering the urn.

The third Test begins on December 14.
