Preview: Doncaster Rovers vs. Rotherham United - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's League One clash between Doncaster Rovers and Rotherham United, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Rotherham United will be looking to retain their spot at the top of the League One table when they travel to basement side Doncaster Rovers on Tuesday night.

The visitors moved to the top of the division with a 2-0 victory at Crewe Alexandra on Saturday, while Doncaster will enter the contest off the back of a 3-1 home defeat to Plymouth Argyle.

Doncaster's home loss against Plymouth on Saturday left them rooted to the bottom of the table, with a record of five wins, four draws and 19 defeats seeing them collect just 19 points.

Rovers, who finished 14th in the third tier last season, have lost six of their last seven in the league, and they are 10 points from the safety of 20th position heading into the next set of fixtures.

Doncaster actually took the lead against Plymouth on Saturday, with Branden Horton finding the back of the net in the 10th minute, but the visitors then scored three times without reply to secure an important three points in their pursuit of the playoff positions.

Gary McSheffrey's side have the worst away record in the division this term, picking up just four points from 14 matches, but they have collected 15 points at home, which is not disastrous considering their position in the table.

Doncaster have lost their last three matches against Rotherham in all competitions, including a 2-0 defeat when the pair locked horns for the reverse game earlier this term.

Rotherham, meanwhile, will enter the contest off the back of a 2-0 victory at Crewe on Saturday, with Michael Smith breaking the deadlock in the seventh minute before an own goal from David Richards made sure of all of the points for the visitors to Mornflake Stadium.

The win for the Millers moved them to the top of the table, with Wigan Athletic being held by Cheltenham Town and Sunderland suffering a 6-0 defeat to Bolton Wanderers.

Rotherham have won 17, drawn five and lost five of their 27 League One matches this season to collect 56 points, which has left them one point clear of second-placed Wigan, although they have played two more games than the Latics, who will face Oxford United on Tuesday.

Paul Warne's side, who were relegated from the Championship last season, have won three of their last four in the league against Bolton Wanderers, Cheltenham and Crewe.

Rotherham have the third-best away record in the division this term, picking up 24 points from 13 matches, and they will be facing a Doncaster side that have only collected 15 points from 14 home league fixtures this term.

Team News

Ollie Younger and Josh Martin made their home debuts for Doncaster against Plymouth, while Mipo Odubeko featured for the club for the first time.

All three players are expected to retain their spots for Tuesday's contest, with head coach McSheffrey likely to resist the temptation to make changes to his starting XI.

Joe Dodoo is Doncaster's joint-leading goalscorer in the league this season with three, and the 26-year-old should retain his spot in a wide area for this match.

Rotherham, meanwhile, have no fresh injury concerns from their two-goal success against Crewe, so it would not be a surprise to see the same XI take to the field.

Joshua Ogunfaolu-Kayode is pushing for a spot in the final third, but Will Grigg is expected to retain his starting role alongside Michael Smith, who broke the deadlock on Saturday.

Shane Ferguson should also keep hold of his starting role, while Rarmani Edmonds-Green is again likely to feature in a defensive area for the league leaders.

Doncaster Rovers possible starting lineup:
Jones; Knoyle, Younger, Olowu, Horton; Smith, Galbraith, Rowe; Dodoo, Odubeko, Martin

Rotherham United possible starting lineup:
Vickers; Edmonds-Green, Wood, Ihiekwe; Ogbene, Rathbone, Barlaser, Wiles, Ferguson; Smith, Grigg

We say: Doncaster Rovers 0-2 Rotherham United

We are finding it really difficult to back anything other than an away victory on Tuesday night; Rotherham will be full of confidence after moving to the top of League One, and we are fully expecting the visitors to secure another three points at Doncaster's expense.
