Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola reveals that he has told injury-plagued captain Vincent Kompany to focus on keeping himself fit.

New Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has revealed that he has told Vincent Kompany to focus on keeping himself fit.

The City skipper has been dogged by injuries in recent seasons, making just 36 Premier League starts in the past two campaigns including only 13 last term.

Guardiola talked up the qualities of the 30-year-old Belgian, but admitted that he needs him to be fit.

"I think England know Kompany's qualities better than me. My dream for Kompany is for him to be fit," he told reporters.

"In the last two years he's played very few games so I just want him to be fit. He's a magnificent defender but when I spoke to him I said just focus on your body."

City are reportedly considering a £51m bid for Juventus centre-back Leonardo Bonucci, which would be a world-record fee for a defender.
