Liverpool are reportedly in the race to sign Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig, as well as showing interest in Rennes's Jeremy Doku.

Liverpool have reportedly joined the race to sign RB Leipzig attacking midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai this summer.

After the signing of Alexis Mac Allister earlier this month, Jurgen Klopp appears eager to add more firepower to his squad, especially in the final third.

Szoboszlai has registered six goals and eight assists in both of his Bundesliga campaigns with Leipzig since joining in 2021, and played a key role in their victorious DFB-Pokal success, scoring in the final against Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Athletic claims that Szoboszlai is high on Liverpool's wishlist and they have met with his representatives, but there are some stumbling blocks in the way which could make a deal hard to strike.

Reports state that a €70m (£60m) release clause in the Hungarian's contract will expire on Friday, and will not become valid again until January, allowing Leipzig to firm up in their stance to keep him at the club.

Also, with Josko Gvardiol being heavily linked with a move to Manchester City, that would strengthen Leipzig's position in the market, and make them more reluctant to let a second key player leave.

Newcastle United have also been linked with a move for the 22-year-old in recent weeks as they look to bolster their squad ahead of playing Champions League football next season.

Despite another of their targets slipping through their fingers following James Maddison's move to Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle appear focused on bringing AC Milan's Sandro Tonali to the club as their big-money signing of the window.

Szoboszlai has attracted great interest even before he joined Leipzig from their partnered club Red Bull Salzburg, starring alongside Erling Haaland, Hwang Hee-chan and Takumi Minamino.

He also scored the memorable last-minute winner that sent Hungary to Euro 2020 against Iceland, but he cruelly missed the delayed finals with injury.

This news comes as Liverpool have also been linked with Rennes winger Jeremy Doku, according to French journalist Mohamed Toubache-Ter.

Doku joined the Ligue 1 club from Anderlecht for €25m (£21.6m) in 2020, and still has two years left on his contract, so, while not coming cheap, he may be a more realistic target financially.

The current Belgian international produced his most productive season yet last term, netting seven goals and providing four assists in 35 games for Rennes during 2022-23.
