Pep Guardiola: 'Perfect performance is needed to progress'

Guardiola: 'Perfect performance is needed'

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola believes that his side can make up the three-goal deficit on Liverpool in this week's second leg if they build some momentum.

Pep Guardiola has warned Liverpool that 'anything can happen' as Manchester City aim to beat the odds and progress through to the last four of the Champions League.

The Citizens are three goals down from last week's first leg at Anfield and do not have the cushion of an away goal against their domestic rivals.

Should Liverpool score on Tuesday night then City would require five goals, which Guardiola admits has left his side requiring the "perfect" performance to keep their European hopes alive beyond the quarter-final stage.

"Of course, to go through you have to make almost the perfect game - create chances, be clinical and concede few chances," he told reporters at his pre-match press conference. "All the conditions have to be perfect to go through.

"But you have 90 minutes and in football everything can happen. We are going to try and we will see. We have to score the first one, then make the second one. We will see. We need the momentum.

"We have to focus on what we do. If we concede a goal, don't give up. We did it many times, in a short time we can create chances and after you have to be clinical. And if we are not clinical, okay, next one, next one, next one."

City head into the match on the back of successive defeats, having also lost 3-2 to neighbours Manchester United at the weekend.
