Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy has been named the Football Writers' Association's Footballer of the Year.

The 29-year-old, who will become a Premier League champion this evening if Chelsea defeat Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge, has scored 22 goals in 34 games in the top flight this season.

The striker, who has provided six assists in the league, came out on top in a poll of 290 journalists, whose top three are all members of the Leicester team.

Vardy was voted ahead of Riyad Mahrez, who won the PFA equivalent of the award last month, and N'Golo Kante.

Earlier this season, Vardy set a new Premier League record by scoring in 11 consecutive games, beating the 10-game record set by former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The striker missed Leicester's last two games due to a suspension, but will be available for the club's final two fixtures against Everton and Chelsea.

Vardy will receive the award at a gala dinner on May 12.
