Marcelo Bielsa has resigned as Lazio boss, just two days after being appointed by the Italian club.

The 60-year-old, who has previously been in charge of Chile, Athletic Bilbao and Marseille since 2007, agreed a deal to take charge of the Serie A team earlier this week.

In an official statement, however, Lazio have confirmed that the Argentine has now left his position, citing a "clear violation" of his contract.

"We note with surprise of the resignation of Mr Marcelo Bielsa, also on behalf of its employees, in clear violation of the commitments undertaken with the contracts signed last week," read the statement.

It is being reported that Bielsa is now the frontrunner to replace Gerardo Martino as Argentina boss.
