A number of senior England players reportedly lost faith in former manager Roy Hodgson during the build-up to their Euro 2016 defeat at the hands of Iceland.

A number of senior England players lost faith in manager Roy Hodgson during their ill-fated Euro 2016 campaign, according to reports.

Hodgson made a number of changes to personnel and tactics throughout both the build-up to the tournament and the tournament itself, which ended with a shock 2-1 defeat at the hands of Iceland on Monday.

The 68-year-old immediately resigned from his post, and Sky Sports News reports that the players had questioned his ability to lead them to glory prior to their ignominious exit.

The selection of Raheem Sterling, whose performances had been criticised throughout the tournament, against Iceland was reportedly one of the contentious issues among the players, as was the implementation of a 4-3-3 formation.

Marcus Rashford was also left on the bench until the closing stages, when he came on and made a number of bright runs, and the report claims that the players wanted to see the Manchester United youngster enter the fray earlier.

The report goes on to say that Hodgson's pre-prepared resignation speech left them feeling as though he doubted the team's chances before the game.

The likes of Gareth Southgate, Glenn Hoddle and Harry Redknapp are currently among the favourites to succeed Hodgson.
