Sports Mole reviews five memorable encounters between England and Sweden.

England face Sweden on Friday in arguably the biggest clash between the pair in recent years.

Victory for the Three Lions in the Euro 2012 encounter would place them in a strong position in Group D.

Meanwhile, Sweden need to gain something following their 2-1 loss to Ukraine on Monday.

With that in mind, Sports Mole has reviewed five memorable matches between the two nations.

England 4-2 Sweden, May 21, 1923

The earliest match between these two took place at the Olympiastadion on May 21, 1923.

It was Aston Villa's prominent striker Billy Walker who opened the scoring for England, before George Thornewell scored his first international strike to send his country into a 2-0 lead.

Harry Dahl scored the first of his two goals for Sweden just past the 30-minute mark, while Jimmy Moore and Walker's second sent England into a 4-1 lead.

Dahl grabbed his second of the match with 10 minutes remaining - but it was England who claimed the win.

England 4-2 Sweden, November 19, 1947

One of Blackpool's finest ever players made the headlines in this encounter as England ran out 4-2 winners against the Swedes. The prolific Stan Mortensen netted three goals, two of which came in the first half.

England's other goal on that Wednesday evening at Wembley came from Chelsea's Tommy Lawton.

AC Milan's striking duo of Gunnar Nordahl and Gunnar Gren grabbed the consolation goals for visiting Sweden.

England 3-3 Sweden, June 8, 1995

Darren Anderton scored one of the best goals of his career to rescue a draw for England in this Umbro International Trophy encounter against Sweden at Elland Road.

As the match headed into stoppage time, the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder sent in a half-volley which nestled in the net via the aid of both posts.

Prior to that, two goals from Hakan Mild within the opening 36 minutes put Sweden in control of the contest. However, Teddy Sheringham netted his first goal for the Three Lions just before break to bring his side back into contention.

Kennet Andersson restored Sweden's two-goal advantage shortly after the restart, but late efforts from David Platt and Anderton denied the visitors a victory.

England 2-2 Sweden, June 21, 2006

England led twice in this World Cup Group B encounter but were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw thanks to a 90th-minute equaliser from Henrik Larsson.

The Three Lions held a one-goal advantage at the break courtesy of a looping volley from Joe Cole. Former Aston Villa striker Marcus Allback went on to level up the scores shortly after the restart with a headed effort.

Cole turned provider for Steven Gerrard five minutes from time for what looked to be the winning goal until Larsson intervened.

Despite the dropped points England went on to win their group, while the Swedes, who also progressed, preserved their 38-year unbeaten record against the English.

England 1-0 Sweden, November 15, 2011

Finally to the present day. The last time the two teams met was in November of last year when England recorded their first victory over Sweden in 43 years.

The winning goal came from a Gareth Barry header, although it was later awarded to Sweden defender Daniel Majstrorovic.

The goal was also the 2000th goal in England's history, and the match featured a new generation of England stars such as Daniel Sturridge, Kyle Walker, Jack Rodwell and Phil Jones.
