Accrington have been present in League One since 2018, and they have been 11th and 12th in their last two campaigns at this level, but the team are currently in a relegation battle in the third tier of English football.

Indeed, a disappointing campaign to date has seen Stanley pick up just 35 points from 36 matches, which has left them in 21st position in the table, one point from the safety of 20th position.

John Coleman's side have only collected one point from their last four league games, suffering defeats to Ipswich Town, Portsmouth and MK Dons during a disappointing run.

Accrington have lost their last two against Portsmouth and MK Dons, and this is actually their third home League One fixture in a row, but the team have the fourth-worst home record this term, only picking up 20 points from 18 matches, which has contributed to their lowly position.

The Reds have actually lost each of their last four matches against Plymouth, including a 3-0 defeat in the reverse fixture earlier this season.

Plymouth, meanwhile, earned promotion from League Two in 2020, and they have finished 18th and seventh in their last two campaigns in the third tier of English football.

The Pilgrims have not been in the Championship since 2010, so it would be a huge achievement to earn promotion this season, and they are currently in pole position to achieve a top-two position.

A total of 77 points from 37 matches has left Steven Schumacher's side in second position in the table, one point behind leaders Sheffield Wednesday and two ahead of Ipswich Town in third.

Plymouth have been victorious in three of their last four league matches, including a 2-0 success over Forest Green Rovers on Saturday afternoon.

James Bolton made the breakthrough in the eighth minute of the contest at Home Park last time out, before Bali Mumba doubled the home side's advantage early in the second period.

Team News

Accrington Stanley's Tommy Leigh celebrates scoring their first goal on January 24, 2023© Reuters

Accrington boss Coleman is expected to make changes to the side that took to the field for the first whistle against MK Dons on Saturday afternoon.

Jack Nolan is pushing to be involved from the start in the middle of midfield, while Korede Adedoyin could also come into the XI on Tuesday night.

Tommy Leigh is Accrington's leading goalscorer in the league this season with six, and the 22-year-old will again start for the strugglers in this match.

As for Plymouth, Joseph Edwards was forced off at the interval against Forest Green Rovers on Saturday, so the Englishman's fitness will need to be established ahead of this match.

Should Edwards overcome the knock, it could be an unchanged XI for this contest, although Ryan Hardie, who has 13 League One goals this term, is pushing to return to the side.

Niall Ennis has scored nine league goals this season, meanwhile, and he will again feature in the final third of the field on Tuesday night.

Accrington Stanley possible starting lineup:
Savin; Fernandes, Tharme, Nottingham; Clark, Leigh, Nolan, Adedoyin; Pressley, McConville, Whalley

Plymouth Argyle possible starting lineup:
Burton; Edwards, Wilson, Bolton, Gillesphey, Mumba; Houghton, Butcher; Hardie, Ennis, Mayor

We say: Accrington Stanley 1-2 Plymouth Argyle

Plymouth have only won six of their 18 away league matches this season, but we are expecting the visitors to triumph in this match. Accrington's recent form has been disappointing, so it is difficult to back the strugglers to collect anything from Tuesday night's affair.
