Jo-Wilfried Tsonga safely progresses into the second round of Wimbledon with a 6-4 7-6(5) 6-4 win over Inigo Cervantes.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has eased through to the second round at Wimbledon courtesy of a straight-sets victory over Inigo Cervantes.

The 12th seed took just over two hours to get past his Spanish opponent 6-4 7-6(5) 6-4 and set up a meeting with either Taro Daniel or Juan Monaco in the next round.

A shock appeared to be on the cards early on when Cervantes broke in the very first game of the match and took a 2-0 lead, but Tsonga then reeled off three games in a row to move in front.

Neither player gave much away on their own serve until the final game of the set, when Tsonga took the second of two set points to break and wrap up the opener 6-4.

Cervantes refused to go down without a fight, though, and he hung desperately on to his own serve throughout the second set, saving nine break points including six when Tsonga had the chance to win the set.

It merely delayed the inevitable, however, as Tsonga won the tie-break 7-5 before winning three of the first four games in the final set and eventually taking his second match point to win it 6-4.
