McLaren driver Jenson Button was taken to hospital this afternoon after picking up an eye injury during practice for the German Grand Prix.

The 36-year-old finished both practice sessions at Hockenheim in eighth place but complained of an eye "irritation" during the second.

McLaren confirmed in a statement: "Jenson complained of an eye irritation during FP2, and has gone to Mannheim hospital to have a precautionary check-up."

Button later took to Twitter to confirm that a "foreign body" had been found in his eye and was removed, meaning that he will be able to compete in the race as planned.

McLaren reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne would have stood in for the Brit had he been ruled out of the contest.
