Preview: Burnley vs. Tottenham Hotspur - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Wednesday's Premier League clash between Burnley and Tottenham Hotspur, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Two sides seeking to build on thrilling away wins at the weekend will lock horns in Wednesday's rescheduled Premier League encounter at Turf Moor, as Burnley take on Tottenham Hotspur.

Sean Dyche's side ran out 3-0 winners against Brighton & Hove Albion last time out, while Spurs sunk Manchester City 3-2 in an Etihad extravaganza.

It has been a long time coming, but Burnley finally have an away win to boast about, as none other than 6ft 5in talisman Wout Weghorst inspired his new club to a storming 3-0 win over Brighton on the South Coast on Saturday.

The Netherlands international opened his Burnley account with a powerful drive in the 21st minute before some strong hold-up play saw him set up Josh Brownhill for his side's second, and the tie was put to bed by veteran winger Aaron Lennon in the 69th minute.

Only a second win of the Premier League season - and an emphatic one at that - means that Burnley do have their fate in their own hands when it comes to the relegation dogfight, as the Clarets have leapfrogged Norwich City into 19th and are five points adrift of safety with two games in hand.

Ending a 12-game winless run in all competitions is just what the doctor ordered before a clash with Tottenham, and focus now turns to ending their six-game winless run at Turf Moor, but they have given Manchester United and Liverpool a hard time on home soil recently.

Despite their overall poor streak at Turf Moor this season, Dyche's side have rather impressively shipped just 10 goals on their own patch in the league and boast the best defensive record in the bottom half by far, but that will be tested to the extreme on Wednesday.

Mere days after it was revealed that Manchester City saw four summer bids for him rejected, Harry Kane showed his admirers exactly what they are missing out on, as the England captain produced his finest performance of the season to propel the Lilywhites to a dramatic 3-2 win on the champions' turf.

Many expected a fourth consecutive Premier League defeat for Tottenham under Antonio Conte, and Riyad Mahrez's late penalty appeared to salvage a point for Man City, but Kane was in the right place at the right time to head home in the fifth minute of injury time to send the visiting support into delirium.

As impressive as their Etihad victory was, there will inevitably be questions as to why Spurs could not produce the goods against the likes of Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers, as Conte's side remain top-four outsiders while they lie eighth in the rankings.

The Lilywhites will temporarily leapfrog Arsenal and Wolverhampton Wanderers into sixth with all three points here and travel to Turf Moor in the knowledge that at least one of their top-four rivals will drop points in Thursday's clash at the Emirates, so the pressure could hardly weigh heavier on Conte's men to deliver again.

The 3-2 win over City did mark the third Premier League away game in a row that Tottenham have conceded two goals, but they have won their last three against Burnley with three clean sheets in tow and will pray for less adverse weather lest another postponement befall both sides.

Team News

Burnley's Maxwel Cornet is helped up after sustaining an injury on February 19, 2022© Reuters

Burnley suffered injury scares with key men Weghorst and Maxwel Cornet during the Brighton clash, but Dyche is hopeful that the duo will both shake off their issues in time for the visit of Tottenham.

It remains to be seen if Charlie Taylor and COVID-positive duo James Tarkowski and Ashley Westwood will be back in time, but Johann Berg Gudmundsson has picked up a fresh injury and Matej Vydra is recovering from his hernia operation.

Dyche will certainly hope to name an unchanged XI if fitness levels allow him to do so, with Nathan Collins set to partner Ben Mee in the rearguard if Tarkowski is unable to start the game.

Tottenham welcomed Eric Dier back to the team with open arms against Man City, but Oliver Skipp (groin) and Japhet Tanganga (knee) are set to sit this one out.

Sergio Reguilon confirmed on social media that he had contracted COVID-19 before the Man City win and is also unlikely to take part, but Emerson Royal should be fine despite coming off with a knock at the Etihad.

Dejan Kulusevski's goal and assist earned him high praise from his manager at the weekend, and the Juventus loanee should form an unchanged attack with Kane and Son Heung-min this week.

Burnley possible starting lineup:
Pope; Roberts, Collins, Mee, Pieters; Lennon, Cork, Brownhill, McNeil; Weghorst, Cornet

Tottenham Hotspur possible starting lineup:
Lloris; Dier, Romero, Davies; Emerson, Hojbjerg, Bentancur, Sessegnon; Kulusevski, Kane, Son

SM words green background

We say: Burnley 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham will be desperate to prove that their thrilling success over the champions was no fluke, and Kane would choose no better time to kick on and rediscover his best goalscoring form here.

We would certainly not put it past Burnley and their new wave of confidence to breach this leaky Spurs backline, but Conte's front three should have the necessary firepower to steer their side to a narrow and vital win.
