Slovenia battle past San Marino

Slovenia battle to a 2-0 win over San Marino to confirm their place in the Euro 2016 playoff draw.

Slovenia have secured their spot in the playoff draw for Euro 2016 thanks to a 2-0 victory over San Marino on the final evening of Group E action.

Predictably, Slovenia were dominant in possession from the first whistle but they often wasted promising opportunities in the final third of the pitch as San Marino attempted to frustrate the visitors.

Opportunities did arrive for Slovenia as the game progressed, but they were left breathing a sigh of relief when San Marino's Andy Selva sent a free kick just past the post midway through the first half.

The lead should have belonged to the away side just before the break when a Valter Birsa cross found Miral Samardzic, who somehow managed to head over from close range.

Slovenia ended the wait for a breakthrough nine minutes into the second half when Bostjan Cesar capitalised on poor marking to power home a header from a corner.

San Marino had looked capable of claiming their second point of the campaign on the final evening, but those hopes were dashed as the game entered its closing stages.

Nejc Pecnik finished the job for the hosts as the substitute peeled away from his marker to head in off the inside of the post after good work from Bojan Jokic on the wing.
