Republic of Ireland defender Seamus Coleman is disappointed at having been knocked out of Euro 2016 after Martin O'Neill's side lost 2-1 to tournament hosts France.

Republic of Ireland defender Seamus Coleman has expressed his disappointment at having been knocked out of Euro 2016.

Martin O'Neill's side took the lead against France in Sunday's meeting in Lyon through Robbie Brady's early penalty, but Antoine Griezmann's brace gave the hosts a 2-1 win.

Coleman told BBC Sport: "We are disappointed. We felt it was there for us and we gave our all. It shows how well we have done that we are disappointed getting beat.

"We wanted to go further for the fans but we hope we made people proud. The fans here and at home are amazing. It is a special bond between the fans and the players.

"We took a lot of belief from the Italy game. Second half was always going to be tough but we couldn't keep the first half performance going."

France will play either England or Iceland in the quarter-finals at the Stade de France on Sunday.
