Aitor Karanka has praised his Nottingham Forest charges for their resilience in responding to a late equaliser to eventually run out 3-1 winners over Newcastle United in the EFL Cup.

The Reds led from the second minute onwards as Daryl Murphy netted with a close-range header but were pegged back in the second minute of injury time through Salomon Rondon's low drive.

Nonetheless, the hosts had more in their tank and retook the lead through Matty Cash before Gil Dias sent a chipped effort over former Forest goalkeeper Karl Darlow in the Magpies goal.

"It was great to win against a Premier League team of their quality and experience," Karanka told Sky Sports News at full time. "We never give in until the end and we showed that again today. We always believe.

"Matty Cash is a player who has energy and scores goals. He is a really good player for our squad.

"I can understand Newcastle's frustrations throughout the game. But we have a very good squad, good strikers and showed we are clinical at the end. When we play in our style, we show just how good we are."

Forest find out who they face in the third round of the competition on Thursday evening from 7pm onwards.
