There have not been many better bargains in Liverpool's history than the signing of Sami Hyypia from Willem II in 1999.

The towering Finn moved to Anfield as a relative unknown for just £2.6m, but when he left 10 years later he had established himself as one of the club's greatest ever centre-backs alongside the likes of Ron Yeats, Alan Hansen and Jamie Carragher.

It didn't take long for Hyypia to be given the captain's armband by Gerard Houllier, and he led the club to their famous cup treble in 2001 - his first pieces of silverware at Anfield.

They were by no means his last trophies, though, and while he was replaced as captain by Steven Gerrard in 2003, Hyypia remained a key part of the team which went on to win the League Cup in 2003, the Champions League in 2005 and the FA Cup in 2006.

In all, Hyypia made 464 appearances for Liverpool before leaving the club in 2009, by which time he had scored 35 goals and picked up 10 trophies in 10 years.
